MHI Thermal Systems Receives JSRAE Technology Award for “e-3D Scroll” Compressor

MHIAE (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Conditioning Europe), a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, is proud to announce that the innovative e-3D scroll compressor, featured in its latest heat pump chillers, has been honoured with the 51st (2023) Technology Award by the Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE). The award was received by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems), also a part of MHI Group.

The award recognises the e-3D scroll compressor’s impressive boost in efficiency while preserving its large capacity. This achievement recognises the superior efficiency of MHI Thermal Systems’ MSV2 and Hydrolution PRO heat pump chillers.

Originally developed in 2005, the 3D scroll compressor has evolved into the e-3D scroll. This advanced design incorporates a sloped tip and end plate in each scroll, replacing the steps found in conventional 3D scrolls.

The innovative design also minimises refrigerant leakage, significantly boosting efficiency, particularly at low loads. Notably, efficiency improvements include a 4.8% increase at 25% load and a 3.2% increase at 50% load. Furthermore, the new e-3D scroll compressor’s versatility allows it to replace existing compressors, ensuring a smooth transition and integration.

MHI Group has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. The company is actively working to reduce CO2 emissions from its own plants and facilities and to decrease the emissions associated with its products used by customers.

Encouraged by this recent industry recognition, MHI Thermal Systems will continue to innovate and develop technologies and products that promote CO2 emissions reduction and energy conservation. By advancing the application of e-3D scroll compressors in a diverse range of refrigeration and heating products, such as commercial air-conditioners and refrigeration systems, MHI Thermal Systems aims to contribute significantly to realising a carbon-neutral future.
